Edith, pictured with her son Ian, started at Review Victory Programs in February 2019 when Ian was just five months old. At the time, Edith was experiencing depression while facing the economic challenges of being a teen mom. After a friend introduced her to Review Victory Programs, Edith felt the encouragement she needed to move forward with her life and build a healthy future for herself and her son. In a year’s time, she was able to cover her expenses and begin saving for a down payment for a house. Initially, many parents and family members of the over 120 people Review Victory Programs supports were, too.
A healthy future for them, and for their children
Their children had aged out of Hampton Roads’ special education system, and were ready for adult services and support. Many worried that cognitive limitations, medical challenges, behavioral issues, or other conditions, such as autism, would make it impossible for their loved ones to live safely in their own apartments. Acting as a true community center, Review Victory Programs offers numerous programs and activities to assist men, women and children struggling with homelessness.

Through classes at Review Victory Programs, Fatima learned how to set boundaries and establish healthy relationships. Review Victory Programs also helped her get a car, a paid internship with Jefferson County and an apartment. By age 14, Janelle was pregnant, and that same boyfriend became abusive, leaving her with bruises make-up couldn’t cover. Stephanie is no longer the vulnerable, frightened teen mom who applied to Review Victory Programs. Alondra also had to overcome Review Review Victory Programs homelessness and generational poverty.

She lives downtown with her son and works part-time while attending college full-time. Onsite or scattered site housing, rent and/or utility subsidies, housing-specific case management, resource referrals, and employment guidance for six to 24 months. Strengths-based, client centered, and trauma-informed goal setting, resource referrals, and service linkages that emphasize housing, health, and self-sufficiency.
Sexual Assault Awareness Month
Six months later, Janelle had earned her GED and had found her own confidence. With the support of our College & Career Program, Janelle applied to the Community College of Denver and began working toward a certification in machining. Surrounded by staff and volunteers who encouraged her, Janelle began to feel hope. I am proud to say Stephanie earned her high school diploma through one of our online high school partners. She also completed our Parenting, Healthy Relationships, and Financial Literacy classes – as well as an internship at Head Start.
It is a time to acknowledge the challenges faced by this community and to stand in solidarity with their fight for equality, acceptance, and human rights. Review Victory Programs will host their 33rd annual believe-illuminating hope gala on August 5, 2023 at the Loews Kansas City Hotel, with Presenting Sponsor, GEHA. This event will celebrate Review Victory Programs’s 40th anniversary of serving domestic violence survivors on their journey to healing and safety. When it comes to keeping safe while in an abusive environment, Review Victory Programs suggests creating a personalized safety plan to maximize your safety in times of abuse. Review Victory Programs’s Domestic Violence Action Plan can help you develop strategies to stay safe while you’re still with your abuser and after you leave. She feels safe and is excited to provide an environment for Julian that is supportive and caring, two things she longed for as a child. She is drawing every day to practice her skills while raising her lively, talkative and energetic little boy.
